LuzIA, curious robot mascot

Do you want to discover how an Artificial Intelligence learns?

LuzIA can observe, compare, make mistakes, receive new clues and try again. Just as we can learn from examples, an Artificial Intelligence can learn to recognize patterns when we teach it information.

To understand better

But… what is an Artificial Intelligence?

An Artificial Intelligence is a program capable of finding patterns in information to help us solve problems, recognize things or make predictions.

For the little ones

Imagine we teach LuzIA many clues about animals. Little by little she can learn which ones are similar and which are different.

Step by step

This is how LuzIA learns

Step 1

Observes

LuzIA receives information.

Step 2

Finds patterns

Compares what it observes with the clues it already knows.

LuzIA
Step 3

Makes a prediction

With the available information it tries to find an answer.

Step 4

We help it

If it makes a mistake, we can give it a better clue.

Step 5

Learns

Saves the new information and tries again.

Step 6

Improves

The better the clues it has, the better its next predictions can be.

Three key ideas

Data, clues and predictions

Data

These are the things LuzIA can observe.

Clues

These are characteristics that can help LuzIA tell some things apart from others.

Prediction

Prediction

"I think this animal is a dog." It's the answer LuzIA proposes using what she has learned so far.

Can she make mistakes?

The main experience

Train LuzIA

Help her follow the clues and find Pluto, Mía and Bimba.

Pluto, Mía and Bimba have disappeared during a big animal party at the beach. LuzIA wants to help find them… but there's a small problem: she doesn't yet know exactly what to look for. Martín, Inés, Alba and Grandpa José will start giving her clues. You'll have to help her when she makes mistakes.

Educational rigor

For grown-ups

This experience uses a simplified representation of supervised learning. The goal is not to mathematically explain how a model works, but to help the child understand four fundamental ideas: an AI needs information; it uses features and patterns; it can make mistakes; and corrections and better data can help it improve.

Something important

LuzIA is a character in the story. Real Artificial Intelligences don't learn exactly like a person nor necessarily "understand" the world as we do. This activity uses a metaphor adapted for young children.
